Building a Resilient Local Food System VISTA

Located in the breathtaking Wind River Mountains and with the nation's most popular National Parks nearby, the Wyoming Food Coalition envisions sustainable local food economies in Wyoming that are diverse, thriving, and equitable. According to U.S. Census data, 11.4% of Wyoming's population experiences poverty. 1 in 10 people face hunger, with even higher rates of hunger for Wyoming children: 1 in 8. Wyoming residents face unique barriers to accessing healthy food and acquiring assistance through social services due to the state's rural nature and great distances between cities and towns. A lack of public transportation infrastructure, short growing season for local food, and limited production of fruits and vegetables across the state create further challenges to citizens accessing health food. Additionally, small-scale food producers in the state face challenges to creating viable businesses and connecting their products to larger markets. By assisting with outreach for food assistance programs. Farm to School activities, supporting small-scale food producers, and advocating for policies that increase access to healthy food for Wyoming residents, the Wyoming Food Coalition works to address high rates of food insecurity and hunger.
