*MTCC VISTA Summer Associate Gallatin Valley Farm to School

Gallatin Valley Farm to School provides children and their families with knowledge and skills about where their food comes from, why they should incorporate more local, healthy food into their diets, and how they can grow and prepare these foods. Our mission is to connect kids and families with local food in the garden, classroom, cafeteria and community, and our vision is that children and families in the Gallatin Valley grow, prepare, and eat healthy food and appreciate where it comes from as a result of integrated local food education and access in schools. 11.9% of people in the Gallatin Valley, and 7.7% of our local children live in poverty. Furthermore, 20% of our local population has low access to food and 13.3% are food insecure, according to the 2020 Healthy Gallatin Community Health Needs Assessment. Our programs aim to help alleviate these problems by providing nutrition, gardening, and cooking education for families and children, giving them tools to access healthier foods on a budget and make choices that will benefit the long-term health and wellness of their families. Improved nutrition is also linked to lower health care costs, which can be a big burden that can help keep families in poverty. Montana Campus Compact (MTCC) serves as the intermediary for this project. MTCC is a CEO-led coalition of colleges and universities that support civic engagement, service learning, and volunteerism across the state. Every year we place cohorts of full-time, part-time, and summer AmeriCorps members with schools, colleges, nonprofits, and government agencies in Montana. The AmeriCorps projects we facilitate increase educational equity, break down barriers between higher education and community organizations, and address the root causes of poverty in communities across the state.
