2021 Teen Empowerment Teaching Artist Summer Associate

This VISTA will be a vital member of the Public Practice team to support projects across the museum, focusing intensively to support teen engagement. Teen programming at the Smart Museum provides multivalent opportunities for South Side youth to access their lived experience, step into their creative brilliance, and contribute to civic dialogue through artful expression. The VISTA will support our flagship program, produced in partnership with Chicago Housing Authority, where teen participants pursue ambitious real-world, human-centered design projects that will impact the larger community. The ideal candidate has deep knowledge and experience of Chicago, including the Chicago Housing Authority. An interest in art and community engagement are required, as is an ability to collaborate and communicate well with others. The candidate should be culturally competent and invested in Black empowerment. Prior Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Access (DEIA) experience or related training preferred. The Smart Museum team works non-hierarchically, preferring to activate each member’s full agency as they draw upon all of their interests, skills, and expertise. We support each person’s ambitions and inspirations This position is a part of the Housing Action AmeriCorps Network, an AmeriCorps VISTA program managed by Housing Action Illinois since 2010. As such, this position will receive customized training, support, guidance, and networking opportunities, in addition to the traditional opportunities for AmeriCorps VISTA positions. Member Duties : Strengthen the partner relationships to increase capacity for organizations to work together: 1. Lead community planning between teens, students, and senior. 2. Liaise with visiting artists and community leaders. 3. Coordinate and organize calendar listings and schedules. 4. Coordinate supplies, lunches, and program materials; support other museum public projects that will unfold across the summer and into the academic year. 5. Co-facilitate the Smart’s multi-site, cross city exhibitions.
