'21 Mother Earth Farm Summer Associate
Emergency Food Network is the main emergency food distributor in Pierce County. We partner with over 70 food pantries, hot meal sites, and shelters to provide them with diverse and nutritious food to feed our neighbors. EFN also operates Mother Earth Farm, an 8-acre farm in the Puyallup River Valley, to meet the need for fresh food in the community. Each year, Mother Earth Farm uses organic practices to grow roughly 100,000 pounds of fruits and vegetables for our partners. With an emphasis on vegetable production, Mother Earth Farm also has an orchard, beehives, and flower garden. We grow and harvest throughout the year, using two high tunnels and three caterpillar tunnels over the winter. With only two full-time staff, the farm relies on the work of seasonal employees, interns, and numerous volunteers from our surrounding community.

Member Duties : Mother Earth Farm Summer Associates will work closely with our Farm Managers and Seasonal Assistants to learn about and carry out all aspects of organic fruit and vegetable production including seeding, cultivating, transplanting, weeding, harvesting and packing. These members will work closely with community volunteers and will be responsible for maintaining a welcoming volunteer environment, giving direction, and answering questions when needed. This summer term aligns with a crucial growing period at Mother Earth Farm. Summer Associates will play a large role in maintaining the health of our plants in the heat of the summer, when weed maintenance and harvesting is most needed. Seasonal Associates will also be able to help with special interest projects at the farm under the direction of our Farm Manager.
