Affordable Housing VISTA, Whitworth University (Year 2)

Like many cities, Spokane’s housing market has contracted. Costs have increased, available inventory has diminished and low-income residents struggle to afford housing. This project aims to break the cycle of poverty by addressing limited affordable housing in a Spokane neighborhood experiencing gentrification. West Central offers abundant opportunities for urban infill, new development, and sustainable repurposing of existing residential space as affordable housing. With support from an active residents’ organization, the project will include research on affordable housing programs and funding strategies. Additionally, the project will develop messaging to support effective storytelling for affordable housing work in West Central. This project is supervised by the Dornsife Center for Community Engagement at Whitworth University and shares direction with the Spokane Low Income Housing Consortium (SLIHC), and the Spokane Alliance/HEART, Homes for Everyone Action Research Team, made up of church leaders and residents working together to expand affordable housing in West Central. This position is in Spokane, in Eastern Washington, about 20 miles west of Idaho and 110 miles south of the Canadian border. Benefits include $513 biweekly living allowance. VISTA members who successfully complete the year receive their choice of either a Segal Education Award (valued at approximately $6,195) or an $1,800 cash stipend. AmeriCorps VISTA is also the only AmeriCorps program where you can earn federal non-competitive eligibility, giving you an edge in the federal hiring process. Whitworth University provides a $300 monthly housing stipend, $50 monthly for transportation (either a gas card or bus pass), plus access to an array of campus programs and services, such as a recreation center, library access, campus activities and training opportunities. A car is required for this position.
