Summer- Easter Seals AmeriCorps VISTA

During this time of crisis in our world and our community, Easterseals team members are on the front lines, supporting our most vulnerable citizens to stay safe and healthy in their own homes. Our Direct Support Professionals in our Supported Community Living programs are filling the roles of home-health provider, mental health supporter, daily living skill builder, med manager, and, perhaps most importantly, friend, to persons with disabilities who have no other support. Our care-providers in our Child Development Center and our small-group respite programs and providing care to the children of essential workers, making it possible for them to report to work and keep our community safe and healthy. Many of the persons that we support through these programs (approximately 84%), live in critical poverty. Our services are, quite literally, their lifesaver. Our work makes it possible for individuals to live in the community, which saves the system hundreds of thousands of dollars each year, as well as making it possible for family members to maintain employment, also contributing productivity to our central Iowa community.
