Summer- Aging Services COVID-19 Recovery Coordinator

Aging Services serves over 3,000 older adults each year who need our assistance. Those we serve are in need our help because they lack family supports and/or are struggling with isolation and depression, health concerns, medication issues or need assistance with activities of daily living. Individuals experiencing isolation and loneliness have an increased risk of heart attack, stroke and death (Hakulinen et al., 2019). In a study published in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, Adult Day Services are effective in decreasing caregiver burden and behavioral concerns in persons with dementia (Vandepitte et al., 2016). Additionally, Adult Day Services that are provided through our organization provide an alternative care structure that provides better social and mental well-being and improves participants’ quality of life as well as reduces family burden.

Member Duties : On March 17, 2020 Governor Reynolds signed a proclamation that closed Adult Day Health Centers due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Aging Services, which operates 3 adult day health centers in Linn, Johnson, and Jones Counties, remained closed until mid-summer. Upon reopening, each adult day center put a tremendous amount of procedures into place in order to protect staff and the vulnerable individuals that we serve. Because of rigorous additional steps that we follow, staff are overwhelmed and need assistance. By having 1 AmeriCorps member in each adult day center, the centers will better be able to manage participant screenings when they arrive for the day, ongoing cleaning that happens in all parts of the building and deploying staff and the AmeriCorps. Member throughout the building to ensure proper supervision of participants while maintaining social distancing.
