Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture - Double Up & Food Hub

The Summer Associate member will work with BRWIA’s Double Up Food Bucks program and High Country Food Hub (an innovative online farmers’ market) as well as emergency food relief projects operated with the Food Hub to increase access to local food in our community. The Double Up Food Bucks program is BRWIA’s food equity program that works to make sure everyone has access to fresh, local food. The DUFB program does private fundraising and grant writing to be able double people’s federal nutritional benefits (SNAP/EBT, WIC FMNP, and Senior FMNP) when they shop locally. Participants can double their benefits at any of the 4 farmers’ markets in Boone such as the Watauga County Farmers’ Market, the King Street Market, the Boone Winter Farmers’ Market, and the online farmers’ market, the High Country Food Hub. The primary goals for working for the Double Up Food Bucks program is to increase awareness of and participation in the program, raise funds for the program, and increase the demand for local food by increasing accessibility to it. The High Country Food Hub (HCFH) is a year-round, online farmers’ market serving Boone and the surrounding area. Each Wednesday, the HCFH aggregates and distributes produce, meat, plants, and value-added items to customers who place online orders throughout the week. The Food Hub also operates as a shared storage facility for local growers and producers who might otherwise not be able to store their products on their property.
