Stewards VISTA: Groundwork Lawrence
The goals for this project are for a Stewards VISTA to engage youth from Pre-K–8 in using and caring for the investments in the community, learning and developing STEM skills. This project will also get to a less tangible goal of connecting youth to each other, empowering them to work together for a common goal, and exposing them to non-traditional career paths. In addition, part of the stewardship project is to work with our Green Team youth to develop newly created spaces. Green Team is our year-long leadership development program for high-school-aged youth and has the dual goals of preparing them for a lifetime of healthy living and environmental leadership, while investing in Lawrence’s future capacity to improve its public health and physical environment. Our program directly improves the lives of Lawrence youth by providing them knowledge around healthy eating habits, hands-on experience with healthy cooking and gardening, programming that incorporates physical exercise, applied environmental research education, connection with professionals, business skills, and soft skills including job training, leadership, public speaking, and community development. The Stewards VISTA member will therefore be helping to develop the high school aged youth’s leadership and professional skills as they work together to plan for community events, career forums and possible internship opportunities. In addition to the Education programming, this position will also support marketing/communication efforts and building a better presence for the organization on social media; and work to enhance the engagement efforts in the community to serve more of the target population.
