Summer Associate BRWIA - Double Up & King Street

The Summer Associate member will work with BRWIA’s Double Up Food Bucks program and King Street Farmers’ Market as well as other farmers’ markets in Watauga County to increase access to local food in our community. The Double Up Food Bucks program is BRWIA’s food equity program that works to make sure everyone has access to fresh, local food. The DUFB program does private fundraising and grant writing to be able to double people’s federal nutritional benefits (SNAP/EBT, WIC FMNP, and Senior FMNP) when they shop locally. Participants can double their benefits at any of the 4 farmers' markets in Boone, such as the Watauga County Farmers’ Market, the King Street Market, the Boone Winter Farmers’ Market, and the online farmers’ market, the High Country Food Hub. The primary goals for working for the Double Up Food Bucks program is to increase awareness of and participation in the program, raise funds for the program, and increase the demand for local food by increasing accessibility to it. The King Street Market is BRWIA’s weekday farmers’ market that operates Tuesday afternoons in downtown Boone from May to October. The King Street Market offers an alternative to the traditional Saturday morning market by acknowledging that busy, working families may not have time to get up early to shop on the weekends. That is why we’ve designed the King Street Market to be an after-work option in a central location for families who want more convenient times to shop local. The King Street Market’s location has also been placed in an area that is in front of the Department of Social Services and the Health Department so those that participate in Senior and WIC FMNP can have a one-stop shop to get their vouchers, double their benefits, and shop local. The King Street Market also works to support producers as it is designed to be less competitive and more accepting of new farmers who may not have the seniority to get into busier marketplaces.
