The Vermont Affordable Housing Coalition is a statewide membership organization dedicated to ensuring that all Vermonters have decent, safe, and affordable housing. Our mission is to: *Ensure that all Vermonters, particularly low and moderate income persons, people with disabilities, Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, New Americans, people experiencing homelesness, elders, and families with children have safe, adequate, physically accessible, and affordable housing *Encourage resident participation and control in their housing *Advocate for the preservation of existing housing, protection of renters, and the development of new, perpetually affordable low- and moderate-income housing *Promote the recognition of housing as a basic right for all Vermonters through education of the public and policymakers *Act as a catalyst in the exploration and development of innovative means to preserve and increase Vermont’s affordable housing stock The Coalition pursues its mission through 6 major activities: 1) Outreach and coalition-building 2) Training and workshops for housing professionals 3) Community education and public relations 4) Research on affordable housing issues and maintaining an information clearing house 5) Education, policy development, and advocacy with local, state, and federal officials 6) Support for resident organizing associations in affordable housing properties VAHC works extensively on policy issues that address the housing needs of low-income and special needs populations. The Coalition’s 90-plus members include Vermont’s non-profit affordable housing developers, community land trusts, homeless shelters and service providers, public housing authorities, funding agencies, residents’ associations, community action agencies, regional planners, and housing, disability and tenants’ rights advocates. VAHC’s members provide housing and services to tens of thousands of low-income Vermonters. www.vtaffordablehousing.org

Member Duties : Passionate about social and economic justice issues? The resident Engagement VISTA will grow our capacity to help our nonprofit members meet the housing needs of low-income and vulnerable Vermonters: *Facilitate information exchange to elevate the voices of affordable housing residents *Work with our Resident Organizer and support the Resident Organizing Network operations including recruiting, engaging, training, and supporting low-income residents of affordable housing and mobile home parks from across the state *Work on special projects, such as “Voices of Home” story-telling project *Help organize coalition & work group meetings *Research and write grants to enhance coalition sustainability *Increase public awareness of housing/homeless needs *Meet with regional and national partners at conferences and trainings *Maintain a library of resources that can help residents meet individual needs
