BMVP - Coronavirus Response Initiative

The Community Development Division is a catalyst for joining community partners with resources to increase access to housing, to create a sustainable community, and to promote neighborhood revitalization. The Montana Department of Health and Human Services reports COVID-19 positive tests in Yellowstone County are low; however, longer term effects of the coronavirus pandemic are becoming more apparent. Results from the City of Billings’ Coronavirus Surveys indicate ongoing efforts within the community to highlight and share disease transmission and prevention strategies, yet there may be a lack of detailed data relative to needs and response priorities in the area. Further, federal, state, local, and community response appears to be fragmented. For those living in poverty, this may become an additional barrier related to their health. 10% of Yellowstone County’s total population lives below the federal poverty level, though the fluctuating unemployment rate since the onset of the pandemic may have increased the number of Montanans experiencing poverty. The extent of potentially damaging health outcomes associated with a lower economic status may also be exacerbated. Additionally, the localized, community-wide assessment conducted in the Fall of 2020 identified more unmet needs for low-income community members. The results of this assessment will assist in planning a coordinated response to COVID-19 in Yellowstone County. Funding resources will be mobilized to increase access to: health education; social service support; and prevention, intervention, and treatment programs. This project will help alleviate poverty by connecting low-income persons to programs that provide prevention, treatment, health and wellness, education, and employment services so this population may achieve success in acquiring a healthy lifestyle and the opportunity to move out of poverty.

Member Duties : Serve with the City of Billings to increase access to healthcare, education, prevention, and intervention strategies related to COVID-19 in Yellowstone County! The overall goal of this project is to reduce the adverse effects of COVID-19 on community members as well as reduce the number of residents testing positive for COVID-19. The City of Billings is spearheading a coronavirus response initiative to assess community need and coordinate / mobilize community resources. A community assessment was conducted in the Fall of 2020 (year one of this project) that highlighted service gaps and served to inform related response, preparation, and prevention projects. This project will require collaboration with area service providers, strategic planning, education and outreach activities, resource development, and volunteer recruitment.
