West CAP - Digital Equity and Technology Integration (LitMN)

West CAP Literacy Program is a Program offered by West Central Wisconsin Community Action Agency (West CAP). West CAP’s goal is to reduce poverty and help people become self-sufficient. West CAP serves Polk, St. Croix and Pierce counties of Wisconsin. Because of COVID we are down to 6 volunteer tutors and 12 learners. Current tutors have continued by using phone calls, Zoom sessions and learning materials. We want to provide services to more learners, recruit more volunteer tutors and teach new and existing volunteers to use basic technology to enhance or replace face-to-face tutoring. West CAP clients are primarily English Language Learners (majority with Spanish as a first language), although we also have Adult Basic Education clients. Adult Basic Education clients may have learning disabilities. Tutors meet once a week with learners, working on learner-centered literacy goals. Most of our clients work and many have children. Most learners have access to smart phones but not computers. Our volunteers are mainly retired individuals with varying technological experience. As a Literacy Leader you will reach into our rural communities to identify community partners for recruiting Volunteer Tutors. The enhancement of our tutor training will give volunteers the tools needed to improve tutoring sessions. It will help our learners reach literacy goals, create pathways to jobs, parental involvement in children’s education and readiness for post-secondary education. Professionally, you will gain or develop skills in marketing/recruitment; training design, development, and evaluation; and experience in the non-profit sector. *Position is part of Literacy Leadership AmeriCorps VISTA program of Literacy Minnesota (LitMN), which places AmeriCorps VISTA members with nonprofits, public agencies & Tribal Nations across the nation to build capacity to improve literacy for individuals through two cohorts: a national Digital Literacy track and an MN-focused Literacy for All track.
