Mankato Youth Place - Youth Literacy (LitMN)

Mankato Youth Place | MY Place opened its doors in October 2018. We work hard to bring opportunities to the kids we serve and provide access to the resources they need to become successful adults. Many of our members’ demographics are similar to those the school district identifies as least likely to graduate. In 2020 and through distance learning we confirmed that many of our members are significantly below grade level. We work hard to be a space outside of school that demonstrates the importance of learning to our members. The Literacy Leader will join our team of staff, interns, volunteers and community partners to improve our members’ academic outcomes. We do this through multiple avenues, including: providing a safe place where kids can build healthy relationships with adults and have basic needs met (such as nutrition, clothing, footwear and personal hygiene); offering homework help, math and literacy games, and practice reading and writing. Our leadership values empowering team members through connecting them to mentors, future opportunities and by giving them the opportunity to try new things. We welcome all team members to provide feedback and share ideas. We ask all team members to bring a spirit of flexibility. It’s important we adapt our environment as needed to meet the needs of our members, families and team members. *Position is part of the Literacy Leadership AmeriCorps VISTA program of Literacy Minnesota (LitMN), which places about 20 AmeriCorps VISTA members with nonprofits, public agencies and Tribal Nations located in Minnesota and Wisconsin to build their capacity to improve literacy for children, youth, adults or families. Literacy Minnesota fosters an organizational culture that is welcoming and inclusive to all. Applications reviewed on rolling basis until filled for 8/30/21 start. Member Duties : Lead our literacy efforts using techniques and activities already in place while incorporating your own ideas to improve our members’ outcomes. The Literacy Leader will work closely with volunteers including retired educators, board members, school representatives and staff to develop an engaging and sustainable program. We have volunteers and board members who have significant academic experience, which will provide the Literacy Leader with a great long-term network! While our program requires that the kids who spend time with us be registered “members”, not all attend each day. We do have a core group who attend each day and are the target group of our academic programming, so the program must be flexible to accommodate everyone. The Literacy Leader will lead our literacy efforts including recruiting volunteers, training staff and evaluating the program. *Additional benefits: Help finding housing; community connections.
