Great River Regional Library - Youth Literacy (LitMN)
Great River Regional Library (GRRL) serves a six-county area in Central MN covering a region of 4,880 square miles. Our patrons are a broad mix of ages, races, abilities and income levels. Four of our six counties have poverty rates above 10 percent. Several communities have sizable populations who are not fluent in English. Do you like rural small towns? We serve them. Do you like urban centers? We have those, and plenty of midsize. Do you like college towns? We have an abundance. GRRL has been working to improve outreach and services to underserved communities. Our 2021-22 Literacy Leader will work with library staff and a range of community partners. In this role, you’ll provide tools and support for children who are struggling with literacy and academic success due to poverty and lack of access. You’ll develop skills in research, networking, project management and program development. You’ll learn about public libraries and community engagement with a focus on diversity, equity and inclusion, and develop storytimes and after-school programs that reflect community identity and needs, helping the library serve children of color, immigrant families and English language learners. Access to resources needed provided. Our ideal candidate has a commitment to serving the public, works well with teams, is comfortable with technology, and has solid organizational skills. We hope you’ll also bring a sense of humor and fun. The ability to “do the voices” during storytime is totally optional. *Additional benefits: Bus pass, professional development, flexible schedule. *Position is part of the Literacy Leadership program of Literacy Minnesota (LitMN), which places AmeriCorps VISTA members with nonprofits, public agencies & Tribal Nations located in MN & WI to build capacity to improve literacy. Literacy Minnesota fosters an organizational culture that is welcoming & inclusive to all. Applications reviewed on rolling basis until filled. Alternate start dates may be available.

Member Duties : Our Literacy Leader will research and develop program guidelines and best practices to build engagement, leadership and school achievement. You’ll talk with lots of people about current programs, community outreach, and gaps in access and services for immigrants, families of color and those living in poverty. We have partnered with United Way and others. You’ll meet with these groups to gain a better understanding of efforts to build school achievement and lift families out of poverty. You will gather feedback about community needs and library services through Zoom small-group meetings with targeted audiences (Latinx, Somali, African-American, LGBTQ, etc.). You will develop pilot projects for early literacy and after-school programming, and ensure future success by training staff and developing a rubric for planning, presenting and evaluating programs in a way that is supported by best practices and responsive to culture and identity. *More info:
