MTCC Summer Associate - Cottonwood ALC

Cottonwood ALC is an organization committed to radically shifting the way we think about learning, education, and what it means to be in community. We work to empower youth and ignite the fire of curiosity in all people. Cottonwood fosters curiosity, play, trust, respect, equity, and autonomy in our members. We support a growing community through age-mixing, valuing personal choice, and celebrating the individuality of everyone’s learning. Our impact on alleviating poverty is through radically shifting the way we think about learning, education, and what it means to be in community. Our summer program specifically engages youth in educational and enrichment activities during the summer which will reduce the risk that they lose ground academically. As addressed in Making Summer Count from Rand Education, “Rigorous studies of voluntary summer programs, mandatory summer programs, and programs that encourage students to read at home in the summer have all found positive effects on student achievement. The combined evidence from these studies suggests that all of these types of summer learning programs can mitigate summer learning losses and even lead to achievement gains.
