Asset Building Corps (OMEN) - Oregon State University ES

The mission of the Oregon State University Extension Service is to engage the people of Oregon with research-based knowledge and education that strengthens communities and economies, sustains natural resources, and promotes healthy families and individuals. The University and Extension have a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion. This commitment makes University resources accessible to Oregonians who have low incomes and who speak languages other than English, especially the growing population of Spanish speakers. Extension in the Portland metropolitan area has over 25 years of experience in working with children and families in poverty . Our commitment to limited resource families is the primary focus of the Extension Family and Community Development Program faculty across the state of Oregon. In addition to the connection that our Extension Family and Community Development faculty have to the research base of the College of Health and Human Sciences, OSU Extension is creating a partnership with the Austin Entrepreneurship Program in the College of Business on the OSU campus. The staff is interested in becoming more directly involved in financial literacy education and asset building community outreach and engagement. We are excited about this new partnership and the potential it will have for the people of Oregon. Uninformed financial management decisions make it more difficult for low-income people to live on the resources they have available and compromise their ability to build assets and manage credit. OSU intends to introduce the Dollar Works financial literacy curriculum in the Portland metropolitan area to provide financial tools for low-income Oregonians.
