*BMVP - Expanding Opportunities for Youth with Disabilities

The Eagle Mount mission is to enhance the lives of individuals with disabilities through recreation and create opportunities for participants to “Embrace Life without Limits” through providing low cost stimulating adaptive recreation experiences for youth with disabilities. Studies show that cognitive development and young children’s IQs are associated with the family’s ability to provide intellectually stimulating experiences. When a family living in poverty’s priority is survival, less cognitive stimulation is provided to children. In a survey between families with and without a member that has a disability, “half of participants with mobility disabilities (47.5%) reported a lack of money as a constraint, and more than a quarter of participants with mobility disabilities (27.7%) reported a lack of companions as a constraint.” When poverty compounds with the rate of disability, youth activities and cognitive development are the last investment with a lasting impact. Eagle Mount is dedicated to enhancing the lives of individuals with disabilities through recreation and create opportunities for participants to engage with each other and the outdoors-improving their social, situational, and fine motor skills. By crossing perceived limitations, youth gain confidence and a willingness to engage in their own education, increasing cognitive development and leading to the quest for meaningful employment and new skillsets. This project will alleviate poverty by increasing access to inclusive outdoor excursion activities that will increase cognitive stimulation and produce higher levels of academic engagement in low-income youth with disabilities, thus ensuring a higher chance of success in educational achievement and future job prospects to break the cycle of poverty.
