*BMVP - Improving Veteran Health Services

Dog Tag Buddies is dedicated to providing veterans with hidden injuries opportunities to lead more fulfilling lives by providing services in the adoption and training of rescued animals to become emotional support animals or service dogs depending on the needs of the individual veteran. Of the nearly 9,150 veteran citizens living in Billings, Montana, as many as 1,800 Billings veterans and their families may be struggling with the effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) at any given time. Less than 63.9% of eligible Montana Veterans are enrolled with Montana Health Care Services, and Montana has one of the highest suicide rates for both veterans and civilians in the United States. A veteran is better able to deal with the stress of living with PTSD and / or a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) with the help of an emotional support animal or service animal by their side. One survey of PTSD suffering veterans reported an 82 percent reduction in symptoms (such as panic attacks, manic episodes, etc.) after being paired with a dog - ultimately helping them to be more engaged and successful as parents, spouses, and employees. Improved health care access helps meet the health, social and emotional needs of veterans and their families. This project will alleviate poverty by providing veterans dealing with hidden illnesses the tools to lead healthier and more productive lives.

Member Duties : Help veterans obtain access to emotional support and service animals to assist in coping with the impacts of a traumatic brain injury (TBI) or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)! The overall goal of this project is to connect veterans seeking healthcare services to treat PTSD and / or TBI to emotional support or service animals through Dog Tag Buddies. The VISTA involved in this project will assist Dog Tag Buddies in its path to receiving Assistance Dogs International (ADI) accreditation through the review and refinement of all policies, procedures, and quality controls. Official accreditation will boost the organizations funding stream, allowing them to invest more into the healthcare services they provide. The VISTA will expand support for Dog Tag Buddies by assisting with material and technological developments that streamline the current client tracking system in order to make it more safe, accessible, and sustainable for current and future veterans.
