*BMVP - Expanding Support for Veterans & Their Families

The Alzheimer's Association leads the way to end Alzheimer's and all other dementia — by accelerating global research, driving risk reduction and early detection, and maximizing quality care and support. Of the more than 94,000 veterans living in Montana, an estimated ten percent have Alzheimer's or a related dementia. In 2020, 22,000 Montanans were living with Alzheimer’s, and 51,000 family members or friends were providing their care. Families carry 70% of the total lifetime cost of caring for someone with dementia through out-of-pocket health and long-term care expenses or from the value of unpaid care. Montana faces a disproportionate impact due to Montana having one of the highest per capita veteran populations in the US. Because age is the greatest risk factors for Alzheimer’s, aging veterans living with Alzheimer’s or related dementias and their family caregivers are projected to more than double by 2050. Combat veterans may be at an even higher risk of dementia, cognitive impairment and neurodegenerative disease related to Traumatic Brain Injuries and other service-related exposure. Helping veterans with hidden injuries also helps their families, their employers, and the community as a whole. By building and strengthening resources and services, the quality of life and quality of care for low income Montana veterans and their family caregivers can improve. This project will alleviate poverty by increasing access to healthcare and bringing awareness to low income veterans searching for healthcare options that treat dementia. Montana veterans and their families will have more access to affordable, quality support services, enhancing their ability to remain safely in their homes. Through these services, veterans and their families will also be connected to additional resources that will assist these individuals in making informed and timely financial decisions.

Member Duties : Support the expansion of dementia care services for low income veterans and their families in south-central Montana! The AmeriCorps VISTA members will complete a community needs assessment of Montana veterans and their caregivers; establish a volunteer recruitment and engagement plan to enhance program services; create a funding plan that supports expansion of veterans’ services; create a database of community partners in order to coordinate a strategic approach to service delivery; engage additional community partners to support the project; and enhance community knowledge of resources available to veteran families via the implementation of a marketing / communications plan.
