CARE Corps Economic Relief Programs Outreach VISTA

CARE is a leading humanitarian global organization dedicated to ending poverty. CARE places special focus on working alongside poor women and girls because, equipped with the proper resources, they have the power to lift whole families and entire communities out of poverty. Last year, CARE worked in over 100 countries, reaching more than 90 million people through 1,300 development and humanitarian aid programs. While global poverty is on the decline, economic insecurity is a growing issue in the United States. CARE is deploying its powerful and proven intervention, the Village Savings and Loan Associations, to improve the lives and futures of more than 1 million Americans. CARE has adapted the global program and piloted the Community Savings and Loan Associations (CSLA) model. Through the Community Savings and Loan Associations CARE seeks to provide increased financial stability. The CSLA model creates groups (10-15 members) within a community who save together and make small loans to each other - over a 12-month cycle. Savings Groups remove barriers found at traditional financial institutions, such as minimum deposit amounts, and allow members to contribute small amounts of money frequently. Savings Groups can also make loans on flexible terms and with low interest rates, unlike predatory payday loans. The CARE Corps VISTA Members will help us expand this exciting program nationally. Members will serve at a CARE partner agency to oversee financial education groups, establish CSLA groups from financial education and other program participants, recruit community volunteers to train and launch CSLA groups as well as document the program for future sustainability. VISTA members, serving in teams of two, will establish 10 savings groups with a target of 100 women as participants.
