'21-'22 Cooperative Special Projects Coordinator VISTA

The Northwest Cooperative Development Center is regional nonprofit that focuses on developing and supporting Cooperatives across the Pacific Northwest. Headquartered in Olympia, Washington, NWCDC works with co-ops of all sectors. About one half of NWCDC's programs involve preserving low income manufactured housing communities by forming resident-owned cooperatives able to buy their manufactured home park and operate it democratically in perpetuity. The remaining half of NWCDC's programs surround converting existing businesses to worker or consumer owned co-ops and helping start-up groups form new co-op businesses. Our work includes coaching co-op members and boards, drafting business and strategic plans, developing systems of governance, and build co-ops organizational capacity.

Member Duties : The goal of this VISTA project is to expand Northwest Cooperative Development Center's services into new sectors, build systems of collaboration between existing co-ops, and secure new sources of funding. Accomplishing these goals will result in more affordable homes being preserved, more cooperative workers being empowered, and a greater freedom for NWCDC to target its work where needed. In the course of fulfilling these objectives, a VISTA member would become experienced in the cooperative business model and will acquire experience taking a project through many stages beginning with research and visioning and ending with launching and evaluating success. Key objectives include 1) having a new multifamily limited-equity co-op program ready to launch and supported by key documents and procedures 2) supporting the Co-Sound association of co-ops 3) developing a fundraising plan and raising a nominal amount of funds as a proof-of-concept.
