'21-'22 253 Impact Coordinator VISTA

On any given day, the kids we serve face challenges ranging from the loss of a parent to the difficulties of poverty or struggles in school. While we believe that every child has the potential to achieve success in life, children facing adversity have the odds stacked against them. “Research shows that children who do well despite serious hardship have at least one stable and committed relationship with a supportive adult.” –The Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University. BBBS serves youth by providing unique, high quality mentoring programs that help close opportunity gaps and change the life trajectory of our young people. We are working hard to create a compassionate society where all youth know they are seen, supported, and matter. BBBS of Puget Sound is part of the nation’s largest and oldest mentoring network, and now is an exciting time to join our team! We currently serve ~230 kids, but 300 more are waiting for mentors. With a waitlist like that, we have an urgent need to build our capacity in Pierce County. To tackle this mission, we are searching for a dynamic individual to help us deepen and broaden our impact and help lead our next phase of work in the Tacoma-Pierce County. The 253 Impact Coordinator VISTA will fight poverty by helping more children access resources that support future success. Flex your communication and community engagement skills to connect BBBS with volunteers and supporters, and by working with an experienced team, you will learn essential skills in marketing, fundraising, and nonprofit management. Most importantly of all, by raising awareness of who we are and what we do, you will help expand our life-changing programs to serve even more youth. The VISTA will be a member of United Way of Thurston County’s VISTA team, made up of 19 other members and supported by the VISTA Leader, who coordinates professional development opportunities, provides individualized support and resources & supports the program’s success.

Member Duties : Based at the Tacoma office of Big Brothers Big Sisters, the 253 Impact Coordinator VISTA will focus on raising awareness of our programs and engaging new volunteer mentors. In this role, the VISTA member will work with staff to develop marketing and outreach efforts specific to our work in Pierce County. Tasks will include updating our supporter database, connecting with Pierce County partners, and helping prospective volunteers navigate the enrollment process. The VISTA will also play a supporting role in fundraising efforts. To engage new volunteers, the 253 Impact Coordinator VISTA will reach out to local businesses, community networks, service groups, and the general public. Because we need mentors from all demographic groups, this work will require a willingness to think outside the box and look for new ways to reach potential volunteers. Workload will likely include public speaking, tabling at community events, and following up with potential volunteers and community partners.
