CoF Meals On Wheels Summer Associate

Meals on Wheels (MOW) of Fairbanks is more than just a meal. The MOW mission is to promote dignity and independence of Fairbanks seniors, while assisting them in leading productive and meaningful lives. MOW strives to meet the needs of older adults by providing services which enhance and promote quality of life, self-determination, independent living, and dignity. The MOW program is run by the Fairbanks Senior Center. Access to a vehicle for meal deliveries will be provided. One in 6 seniors in the United States experiences food insecurity. In Fairbanks, it is one of the top five concerns of our seniors, according to the Senior Needs Assessment conducted in 2019. One in 4 seniors lives alone, and one in 5 says that they are lonely. The MOW program is essential for seniors struggling with hunger, but also malnutrition and social isolation. This program significantly aids seniors to live in their own homes, independently. Seniors eat nutritious meals regularly and in return, avoid seriously life-altering malnutrition. In FY20, the MOW program delivered over 64,000 meals, and in FY21 MOW is on track to deliver over 77,000 meals. The meals are prepared and delivered by well-trained staff and volunteers. Our MOW volunteers also provide wellness checks for the seniors. MOW volunteers build rapport and relationships with our recipients. They are frequently the first to detect any changes in a senior’s lifestyle or personality that could require attention or a referral. The AmeriCorps VISTA program in Fairbanks is housed through the City of Fairbanks (CoF). Summer Associates serve for 10-weeks helping local organizations meet their needs through direct or indirect service. Summer Associates work 40 hours per week and in Fairbanks, receive a monthly living allowance of $1,314 which is paid bi-weekly. At the end of a successful 10-week service term, they also have the choice between an education award of $1,342 or a cash stipend of $345.
