Summer Field Asst - The Nature Conservancy/VHCB
 
 
 
The mission of The Nature Conservancy is to protect the lands and waters on which all life depends. The Southern Vermont Stewardship Technician position is based in Poultney and will support the Conservancy’s mission primarily in the southern part of the state. This person will participate in and support hands-on, outdoor field service several days per week, which may include invasive plant control and mapping, trail maintenance, boundary marking, property monitoring, and scientific research. In addition, they may support the work of staff on our conservation and communications teams to help further the mission of The Nature Conservancy. Approximately half of service will be performed in an office setting and the other half will be outdoors in inclement weather and steep terrain. There will be some long days and several hours spent driving to field sites regularly. Some evening and weekend work will be required. This position is Quarter Time: Requires 455 hours of service for an average of 40 hours per week for 13 weeks. Member will receive a living allowance of $5,400 (pre-tax), and an education award of $1,678.57 (pre-tax) upon successful completion of service. Member Duties : • • Participate in, coordinate and periodically lead outdoor stewardship activities with interns and volunteer groups. • Maintain public land walking trails, signs, ledger boxes, kiosks, parking areas and property boundaries • Conduct monitoring visits to private & public land under conservation easement or deed restriction • Prepare for and follow up on stewardship activities, including equipment and vehicle maintenance & cleaning, record keeping, purchasing supplies, and communicating with volunteers • Conduct data collection with GPS unit • Recruit volunteers for Host Site activities and outdoor stewardship activities, including: invasive plant removal, trail maintenance, boundary marking and other land management tasks, as well as research projects, media events, and unpaid internships.
