Opportunity Council - FFB - Garden & Grove Project VISTA

The Foothills Food Bank (FFB) has designed and will be implementing a garden and orchard on the grounds surrounding the building to provide fruits and vegetables for distribution to community members at the FFB. The garden space will include a Community Learning Garden for students enrolled in the Head Start preschool program, which is located on the campus of the East Whatcom Regional Resource Center, next to the FFB. Fruits and vegetables grown in the garden and orchard will be distributed to FFB clients and provided to the kitchen staff for the Head Start meals. The goal of the garden and orchard is to provide high quality, locally grown produce for food bank clients and the children enrolled in the Head Start program, to increase the quantity of nutrient dense foods into the diets of adults and children, and to improve food security for families. An additional goal for the Head Start garden is to provide the children the opportunity to learn about where fruits and vegetables come from and give them a hands-on, in the garden experience, hopefully leading to healthier food choices now and in the future. Additionally, the Summer Associate will assist the Community Engagement VISTA with the Snap-Ed Cooking Matters Program by packing produce bags weekly for the Snap-Ed participants to use in their cooking classes and assist the FFB’s Operations Manager with distribution of groceries and produce at FFB distributions. This position is located in a beautiful rural areas 30min east of Bellingham. Carpooling from Bellingham with other VISTA members will be an option.
