M:STL - Audubon Flight Crew Team Lead: Summer Jobs SA VISTA

The mission of The Audubon Center at Riverlands is to connect people to the beauty and significance of the Mississippi River and the Great Rivers confluence, to inspire conservation of the river’s rich diversity in birds, wildlife and other natural resources, and to support healthy, vibrant communities. Opened in 2011, the Audubon Center at Riverlands is one of 41 Audubon Centers in the U.S. We are located in the 3,700-acre Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary on the banks of the Mississippi River near its confluence with the Missouri River. Using science, education, and public engagement, we connect people to the beauty and significance of our Great Rivers and give them the knowledge and tools to help protect these vital and cherished natural resources. Bird conservation is at the core of what we do. But why Birds? Birds are in nearly every ecosystem on the planet. They are pollinators, seed dispersers, predators, and prey. And, within the network of connections that make up an ecosystem, birds are uniquely positioned to act as harbingers of the health of the land. This makes what’s good for birds good for entire ecosystems which includes us humans. Birds evoke wonder and curiosity and therefore serve as inspiration and conduits to understanding ecosystems. We focus on birds because it’s BIGGER than birds. It’s smart conservation for the Great Rivers we love. With your support we can do great things for conservation throughout the confluence corridor of St. Louis!

Member Duties : The Flight Crew Team Lead VISTA will assist with the facilitation of Flight Crew, our teen summer jobs corps, as well as youth program and educational outreach through our Center over the summer. Flight Crew addresses summer learning loss by providing hands-on learning on STEAM topics and career exposure opportunities for young people in under-resourced communities. Many students, especially those in Missouri where summer break was recently extended, are at risk for learning loss in the summer months. This Member will also assist with education and engagement at the Center. These efforts will address poverty alleviation by building high quality learning and paid work opportunities to young people in under-resourced communities in North St. Louis County.
