PCCE- Marist College (SA)

Marist is dedicated to helping students develop the intellect, character, and skills required for enlightened, ethical, and productive lives in the global community of the 21st century. The College fulfills its mission by pursuing three ideals: excellence in education, a sense of community, and a commitment to service. Our project will build the capacity of our 13-bed campus, a community garden to not only provide students and other campus stakeholders with access to fresh produce but to build linkages with a local fresh market to share surplus produce. Access to fresh vegetables and to space to grow food in community and home gardens has been found to create a healthier food supply and reduce food insecurity, according to a study by researchers at the University of California and Santa Clara University. Marist College Students: There are 5,037 undergraduate students and of that 16% are eligible for the Pell Grant population. The number of food-insecure students is unknown, but we have anecdotal evidence of the need to develop a referral network and accessible resources for students who experience this hardship.
