UMN Morris, Intercultural Education, IA&MN Campus Compact

The Center for Community Partnerships (Center) at the University of Minnesota Morris (UMM) connects UMM assets to small towns in MN. Rural MN has experienced a rapid influx of new immigrants over the last 20 years. Linguistic and cultural differences present challenges to immigrants, educators, and community members. Most access points for culturally responsive educational opportunities and translation and interpretation assistance are located in metro areas and do not meet the unique needs of small towns. The Center has been addressing these challenges since 2010. The Center led a community needs and assets assessment that resulted in recommendations and, eventually, several ongoing programs to address educational and civic inequalities in Stevens County. We now wish to share what we have learned with other rural communities. The VISTA member will assist three small towns in conducting similar community needs and assets assessments and setting goals, as well as expanding the Center’s existing programs to serve more rural Minnesotans. The VISTA will work with community members and UMN Morris faculty, staff, and students to meet these goals. This project is part of the Community Corps VISTA Program, operated by Iowa & Minnesota Campus Compact. The program strives to eliminate poverty through campus-community partnerships by placing full-time capacity building support in nonprofit organizations and higher education institutions. ***Please also send cover letter and resume to supervisor. Interviews will occur on a rolling basis. Preference given to candidates who apply early.***

Member Duties : In collaboration with UMN Morris faculty, staff, students, and community partners, the VISTA will identify and support three rural communities with significant immigrant populations in completing an intercultural education needs and assets assessment and plan and continue to connect these communities with UMN Morris assets to support the plan’s implementation. In addition, the VISTA will assist in the delivery of the Puentes al Futuro program to a wider rural audience beyond Stevens County, providing information about U.S. post-secondary options, application processes, and financial aid processes. Finally, the VISTA will assist in the development and delivery of a virtual Tercero community translator/interpreter training for rural Minnesotans to increase the number of people who can address language and cultural barriers in their communities.
