UMN Morris, Stevens County Food Systems,IA&MN Campus Compact

The Center for Community Partnerships at the University of Minnesota Morris (UMM) connects UMM assets to small towns in MN. The Center is leading a project to help alleviate food insecurity in Stevens County, MN, a serious problem documented by several local organizations. Existing programs which address food insecurity struggle to meet diverse local needs and require better coordination and connections. Our goal is to ensure that people experiencing food insecurity have access to and the ability to choose how they access fresh, healthy foods, and knowledge of food-related resources. The VISTA will work with UMM faculty, staff, and students, people experiencing food insecurity, and community partners to conduct a community needs and assets assessment (CAA). The CAA will map the county’s assets and barriers as they relate to food security. Based on the outcomes of the CAA, the VISTA and team will establish goals and timelines for work in areas which may include sustaining the local food pantry; addressing transportation barriers; exploring community gardening; addressing financial support; respecting autonomy; and connecting local producers with people experiencing food insecurity. This project is part of the Community Corps VISTA Program, operated by Iowa & Minnesota Campus Compact. The program strives to eliminate poverty through campus-community partnerships by placing full-time capacity building support in nonprofit organizations and higher education institutions. ***Please also send cover letter and resume to supervisor. Interviews will occur on a rolling basis. Preference given to candidates who apply early.***
