PCCE- Shippensburg Community Resource Coalition (SA)

The Shippensburg Community Resource Coalition (SCRC) is a collaborative effort to provide quality social services and youth programs that are accessible and safe and that recognize the dignity and worth of each person. Our goal is to help community members reach their full potential. The Summer Learning Program (SLP) is a summer program for students entering grades 1-12 that helps address the physical, mental, and emotional health needs of youth. SLP provides free breakfast, snacks, lunch and activities for 8 weeks during the summer for Shippensburg youth. As an open Summer Food Service Program site, any child 18 years old and under can receive breakfast and lunch. In addition to meals, our programming is specifically designed to enhance the overall well-being of children. Families experience increased food insecurity in the summer when school is not in session and free/reduced lunches are not readily available. Youth receive two meals a day and it increases the family’s spending capacity to purchase either more food or pay other bills. The addition of an SLP Summer Associate (SA) will allow SCRC to increase our efforts to address food security beyond providing for youth’s urgent need for food. The SLP SA will focus on ways to permanently increase participants’ food security by increasing the family’s access to local resources and nutritious meal planning. The SA will accomplish this goal by strengthening its partnership with local food resources to help increase participants' knowledge of food resources in the area. The SA will implement and expand “Taste Test Tuesdays,” a program that will use items from local food pantries in family-friendly recipes. To encourage sustainable healthy eating habits, the SA will involve older SLP participants in the cooking demonstrations. It will increase participants’ knowledge of cooking nutritious food and how they can make the best use of local food resources.

Member Duties : The two (2) Summer Associates will be involved in the planning, preparation, and implementation of the Summer Learning Program (SLP) such as enrichment activities related to healthy habits, literacy, and the arts to students entering grades 1-12. They will identify, establish, and implement the logistical structure for the daily operation of serving youth breakfast and lunch including volunteer recruitment. They will develop and implement a parent and child survey to assess the needs of families and evaluate the program’s outcomes. They will increase access to available community resources by strengthening partnerships with local food resources. They will implement and expand “Taste Test Thursdays” to increase family’s use of local food resources and nutritional meal planning. These activities will help reduce family's poverty by increasing their food security as they will have access to more food and can reduce their food budget.
