AFVN Miami Dade College Community-Campus Partnership

The overall goal of the Community-Campus Partnership AmeriCorps VISTA Coordinator program is to build the capacity of Miami Dade College to create stronger, deeper, mutually beneficial and sustainable programming in five low-income communities adjacent to 4 MDC campuses (Eduardo J. Padron, Wolfson, Medical and North campuses). The target neighborhoods include Overtown, Opa-Locka, Little Havana, Liberty City, and Little Haiti. The project aims to increase retention and post-secondary success for MDC students, will include low-income and/or first generation college students, and will provide direct assistance to a minimum of 16 non-profit organizations in these 5 neighborhoods with the placement of at least 100 MDC student volunteers each year. Currently, only 30% of MDC students complete their degree within 150% of the expected time, and 65% of the MDC students are identified as low-income, with 43% living below the poverty level, and 89% are ethnic minorities.

The member will be responsible for building and/or re-establishing sustainable, reciprocal partnerships with at least 16 non-profit organizations (i.e. non-profits, schools, government initiatives) in the five target neighborhoods, conducting site visits, and collaborating with staff and community agencies to identify strengths and partnership opportunities. The VISTA will also work with the iCED department to recruit and place at least 100 MDC service-learning students with the featured neighborhood partners.
