2021-2022 Communications VISTA
 
 
 
The Garfield Park Community Council (GPCC) is a community-building organization made up of dedicated residents and allies working together to develop leaders and create opportunities and programs that build a vital Garfield Park community. The Communications Associate AmeriCorps Member will work on a variety of outreach projects, including press releases, flyers, mailings, annual reports, as well as social media posts and website content. Additionally, the position will assist with writing grant proposals and reports, building the capacity of the GPCC’s development department. Finally, the AmeriCorps member develop and revise digital outreach methods, improving on email outreach and utilizing a CRM system for contact management, so that more residents in Garfield Park are aware of healthy and affordable housing resources and programs that build health and wellness in the neighborhood. The AmeriCorps member will be supervised by the Director of Development and Communications, with support from the Housing Specialist and Executive Director. An ideal candidate for this position is someone who is a swift learner who is able work well with others, as well as with a diverse group of people including Garfield Park residents and organization staff. Strong writing skills, attention to detail, basic graphic design, and project management skills are preferred. Garfield Park is a primarily and historically African American community, and AmeriCorps members should display a commitment to racial equity and inclusion. This position is a part of the Housing Action AmeriCorps Network, which is an AmeriCorps VISTA program managed by Housing Action Illinois since 2010. As such, this position will receive customized training, support, guidance, and networking opportunities, in addition to the traditional opportunities for AmeriCorps VISTA positions. Member Duties : AmeriCorps member duties will include researching housing programs working with the GPCC team to promote local and city-wide housing programs and neighborhood development initiatives. Primary task areas include: Develop a work-plan and timeline for unique and ongoing communications projects related to housing and related wellness initiatives with guidance from supervisor and input from program staff members. Collaborate with GPCC staff on outreach and implementation of communication materials to advertise current programs, providing support for digital literacy programs necessary for virtual or web-based programs. Collect and record information of individuals interested in housing programs to help the GPCC more effectively communicate opportunities. Build the GPCC’s capacity to reach more neighborhood residents with healthy, safe, and affordable housing by assisting with fundraising, including the development of proposals and reports.
