2021 Garden and Market Summer Associate

The Garden and Market Associates will work with the GPCC’s Wellness Initiative to increase healthy food and food security and interrupt the cycle of poverty on Chicago’s West Side. The Wellness Initiative aims to increase the health and wellness of Garfield Park residents, through the core offerings of the Garfield Park Garden Network and the Garfield Park Neighborhood Market, as well as the Youth Garden Corps. GPCC is a community-building organization made up of dedicated residents and allies working together to develop leaders and create opportunities and programs that build a vital Garfield Park community. An ideal candidate for this position is someone who is a swift learner who can work on a variety of projects. This person needs to be able to work well with others, as well as with a diverse group of people including Garfield Park residents and organization staff. Experience with urban agriculture, social entrepreneurship, youth programming and research and data analysis, or community development is preferred but not required. Garfield Park is a primarily and historically African American community, and the GPCC seeks AmeriCorps members who display a commitment to racial equity and inclusion. This position is a part of the Housing Action AmeriCorps Network, an AmeriCorps VISTA program managed by Housing Action Illinois since 2010. As such, this position will receive customized training, support, guidance, and networking opportunities, in addition to the traditional opportunities for AmeriCorps positions. Learn more about the program on Housing Action’s website.
