USCRI - Lake Effect Leaders

It is well-documented that refugees and immigrants are critical to the economic strength of Erie: reversing the city’s population decline, expanding home ownership, and driving growth in the workforce of northwestern Pennsylvania. This demographic makes up the only sector of the population in this region that is growing. Today, USCRI Erie is the only refugee-serving agency in the area that still conducts the full range of resettlement services. Volunteer support for these programs normally comes in various forms such as English language conversation partners, sorting donations for winter clothing and professional clothing, soliciting donations for hygiene supplies, or making personal connections with potential employers. VISTA support will help USCRI Erie to re-activate volunteers who have lapsed since the pandemic, and recruit new volunteers who will help to get people jobs and keep them employed through these difficult times. The VISTA position at USCRI Erie will be to re-shape community outreach for volunteer recruitment and management to meet the conditions of a rapidly transitioning landscape, and with a primary focus on refugee resettlement programs in workforce training, digital literacy, English language classes, and employer relations.

Member Duties : The focus of this project has more of an internal goal to re-engage volunteers at USCRI Erie in light of the pandemic, but the target for those volunteers will be USCRI Erie’s workforce preparation program, and there are larger efforts in the community addressing that issue from the Erie Regional Chamber and Growth Partnership, the Manufacturer’s Association, and general public interest in the interaction between employers and educators including regional technical schools, higher education, and an emerging community college. The workforce preparation that USCRI Erie provides, is highly specialized for newly-arrived refugees and some immigrants. As needed on an individualized basis, clients can be channeled into additional education / training certification, and USCRI Erie maintains excellent relationships with community organizations that share common goals.
