2021 New Donations Space Upgrade VISTA Summer Associate

The Summer Associate will upgrade a newly designated space for donations in our warehouse. This will fight poverty by helping us turn the mountains of in-kind donations that we receive every year into an organized system. In turn, our programs can provide clients with the everyday items they need to survive and move forward throughout their time of homelessness. The Summer Associate’s project will create a safer, more efficient, and well-lit donations area in our warehouse. This position will legitimize and improve the space newly designated for these areas after our COVID-19 new men’s shelter build-out by finding solutions for brightening and improving the wall space and floorspace and finding lighting solutions and organizational solutions with our staff and volunteers. The newly designated space for donations is planned to be more permanent. It needs an upgrade to improve the efficiency of getting our in-kind donations to our programs and surplus donations to our community partners. The Summer Associate will work with staff and volunteers to achieve the upgrade, and volunteers will continue to work in the upgraded area to process donations. Ideal candidates for this position will be able to work as a member of a team, work on a timeline, and be able to research creative solutions. General construction skills preferred. This position is a part of the Housing Action AmeriCorps Network, an AmeriCorps VISTA program managed by Housing Action Illinois since 2010. As such, this position will receive customized training, support, guidance, and networking opportunities, in addition to the traditional opportunities for AmeriCorps positions. Member Duties : •Create pre-survey for staff and recurring donations volunteers to determine most pressing needs and ideas for the physical space. •Create upgrade plan for the space; create work timeline. •Implement plan with Building and Grounds Director, Volunteer Director, and recurring donations volunteers. •Schedule needed safety and tool usage trainings, if applicable, with buildings and grounds director. •Identify items needed for project that Hesed does not have, and work with staff and community to procure items. •Perform work with volunteers and guests. •Create, administer and analyze post-survey for same staff and volunteers that took the pre-survey •Analyze themes in survey and create a final report for building and grounds director and volunteer director, including proposed next steps, if any, to improve space further.
