2021-2022 Youth Program Development VISTA

Territory provides place-based skill-building programs in urban design for young people who want to have a positive impact on their communities. In 2021 Territory is launching an internship program for young people ages 16-21 who live in Westhaven Park, a Chicago Housing Authority neighborhood on the city’s West Side. The VISTA member will document program activities, identify benchmarks, and assess impact. The VISTA Member’s goal is to create a program outline and toolkit for community developers who want to include youth in the design, planning, and development of their communities. This new program will open doors to careers, education, and leadership opportunities that will help young people break the cycle of poverty. The ideal candidate is someone with prior experience working with youth, interest in community empowerment, and demonstrated flexibility working independently and in teams. Prior experience with trauma-informed and restorative justice practices is a plus. Prior lived experience in Chicago, or in Westhaven Park area is another plus. Working at Territory is a unique, energizing experience. Youth voice is centered at all levels within our organization - we directly involve our youth teams in directing our projects, writing our grants, making decisions with our Board, and other vital work. We seek to create a safe, welcoming, and empowering environment for all members of the Territory community. Our team strives to be flexible, open-minded, and caring- towards our work and each other. This position is a part of the Housing Action AmeriCorps Network, which is an AmeriCorps VISTA program managed by Housing Action Illinois since 2010. As such, this position will receive customized training, support, guidance, and networking opportunities, in addition to the traditional opportunities for AmeriCorps VISTA positions.
