CNHED Community Impact Specialist VISTA

Mi Casa, Inc.'s mission is to provide quality affordable housing in the Washington D.C. area to foster healthy and thriving communities. Founded in 1992 and located in Washington, DC, Mi Casa is an affordable housing nonprofit that seeks to prevent displacement of low-income communities in D.C., the majority of which are communities of color, and ensure these populations can continue to live and thrive in the District as housing costs become more and more out of reach. To achieve these goals, Mi Casa uses several unique strategies, including increasing deeply affordable home-ownership; owning, operating, and developing extremely affordable rental properties; fostering limited equity cooperatives; and facilitating intergenerational housing opportunities. Engaging residents, and capturing data on resident engagement, is essential to our work in developing affordable limited equity cooperatives and affordable rental buildings. Furthermore, understanding, capturing, and disseminating the impact of our work will help to increase our overall effectiveness in implementing our community-driven affordable housing programs as well as build the potential for greater support for our work and our mission. By (1) creating a community engagement and tracking strategy, (2) analyzing impact via a newly developed database system, and (3) designing strategies to communicate this impact, a VISTA member will significantly contribute to enhancing Mi Casa’s capacity to achieve its affordable housing goals.
