CCMA CUA Pathways to College Youth Mentorship
The Pathways to College initiative provides a mentorship program that calls on university students to rise up to the challenge and help create pathways for students of color (primarily Black and Hispanic) to reach their post-secondary academic and career goals. The mentoring program, which specifically serves middle school students provides them with exposure to college and career opportunities. These students participate in meetings on our campus, when possible, giving them a chance to see themselves physically on a college campus, thus demystifying the college access experience. The initiative provides programming accessible to high school students who have participated in the middle school mentoring program. These opportunities include major-exploration workshops with CUA faculty and staff. These sessions give students an opportunity to remain engaged with their mentors and to learn more about the skills they will need to be successful in college. Pathways to College also offers workshops and seminars for parents of the students participating in the mentoring program. These sessions provide parents with a resource that they can utilize to better support their children during their high school years. While the primary target audience for these workshops are parents of students participating in the mentoring program, we will expand our outreach to parents throughout the DMV area. The initiative leverages existing relationships with Catholic middle schools that primarily serve students of color, like the San Miguel Middle School in Washington, DC, as well as existing family strengthening programs offered by Catholic Charities in the Archdiocese of Washington.
