CCMA Civic Circle Lift Every Voice Project

The Civic Circle is expanding its arts-based civic learning program, which currently reaches students age 8-13 in Eastern Montgomery County as part of a partnership with the subsidized housing provider Making Home Possible/Montgomery Housing Partnership (MHP). Students learn seven civic skills we call “steps to democracy,” including civil conversation (Listen!), media literacy (Learn!), and voting (Choose!). Civic learning correlates directly to measurable increases in academic achievement, graduation rates, employability and voter turnout. The Civic Circle aims to quadruple its program reach in three years with three new partners, create online curriculum materials to make its equity-informed method for empowering young students with civic skills through the arts available to teachers everywhere, and achieve sustainability. The expansion will involve formative evaluation of existing programs, the creation of tools and infographics to demonstrate impact, curriculum development, the establishment of new partnerships, and new funding streams. A key part of the project will be institutionalizing and expanding partnerships with community allies, such as Montgomery College, that have made older students available to visit Civic Circle workshops as guest speakers. This program offers the VISTA member opportunities to develop skills in a variety of areas, including educational and arts programming, community outreach, civic engagement and civic learning, fundraising, evaluation and nonprofit management.
