Healthy Shelby County VISTA
 
 
 
The goal of the program is to improve Shelby County’s effectiveness in anti-poverty and equity work to pull up the 21.7 percent of Shelby County residents out of poverty. The initiative seeks to increase access to healthy and locally available foods in Shelby County. The VISTA will build community garden operational infrastructure through research, create interactive programs, and building capacity for developing sustainability for the community gardens. This VISTA will create educational curriculum to supplement local community gardens. Additionally, the VISTA will provide support with researching best practices for municipal ran community gardens and building capacity to create a sustainability model for the community gardens.

Member Duties : Establish a comprehensive marketing strategy regarding the Healthy Shelby County community garden initiative to engage targeted population. Create strategic marketing plan to engage targeted population. Create educational schedule to include timeline and speakers. Shelby County will provide educational workshops and offer hands on opportunities for citizens to experience the community garden. Build a recruitment, retention and recognition program to include a training series for the volunteers as well as targeted population. Develop a virtual and in person training model that provides access as it relates to Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion (DEAI). Act a community liaison for the Shelby County Government Community Garden program. Recruit 10-20 volunteers to assist with the Community Garden. Develop a plan to secure 400-500 community gardeners.
