ShareCorps- Legion Field Community Garden- Summer
Equitable food systems are interlinking systems of producers, distributers and consumers that value each other and work together to ensure no one goes hungry. Our F.A.M.I.L.Y. links together these systems through partnerships with City governments, local Health Departments, schools and church groups who support the growing movement for locally based food systems. Community gardens, food processing kitchens, Summer Food Service Programs and local Farm Markets are part of a growing food ecosystem that expands local access and healthy choices to consumers. Local options for food choices also means local opportunities for entrepreneurs and economic growth. This multi-faceted approach offers VISTA associates opportunities to work with a variety of food related organizations and relate their project to the food ecosystem. Opportunities for direct service include assisting in community gardens, Summer Food Service Programs, food processing and distribution programs. Program research and design for additional garden sites and public outreach are additional indirect service opportunities.
