ShareCorps- Goodwill Industries- Financial Literacy
 
 
 
Goodwill employs over 400 individuals, of whom nearly 70% are classified as disabled or disadvantaged in a four-county area: Erie, Huron, Ottawa and Sandusky Counties, Ohio. We operate four diverse business divisions: Mission Services, Retail Operations, Manufacturing, and Recycling. Our employees, most of whom work part time come to us from many different situations. Some have recently graduated from high school and are seeking work experience. Others may be restarting their life after an addiction or from spending time in prison. Some employees have had to return to work due to financial reasons, while others have disabilities which may have hampered them finding employment in the past. A number of employees have self-identified that they are either homeless, on food stamps, have insignificant work experience, or on welfare. Many have indicated disabilities such as mental illness, learning disabilities and others. Our employees are working hard to achieve a secure future for themselves and their family.

Member Duties : Our VISTA member will advance Goodwill's mission of helping our program participants, employees and clients achieve financial independence. The Member will create and implement a needs assessment to identify the present and ongoing financial challenges of the target population in order to establish a financial literacy program. Examples of programming could include: budgeting courses, understanding the EITC tax benefit, opening a savings/checking account, etc. The member will recruit volunteer trainers to present the program to participants. As financial insecurity is a major stress in life, our goal is to ease this burden and resulting stress by educating the participants in managing their finances. By improving their finances, our VISTA will have helped someone improve their life. What a worthwhile accomplishment!
