HPU Healthy Futures VISTA

High Point University (HPU) seeks to host fourteen VISTAs and two VISTA leaders to improve education and food security in High Point. All VISTAs can live in houses owned and maintained by HPU, but located off the main campus. All VISTAs will also receive a 19 meal dining plan during the academic year to off-set their food costs. The VISTAs will have individual placements in the city of High Point, but they will meet weekly for check-ins, do professional development together, and work on some projects as a full team. Food Security VISTAs will divide up several key tasks: 1. Promote and develop community gardens throughout High Point. 2. Expand market options for farmers in the city. 3. Deepen the network of food pantries, backpack programs, and hot meal programs in the city. 4. Improve food education in High Point. This project needs VISTAs who bring skills like: community-building, research, marketing, networking, project development, and public speaking. VISTAs recruited into this project will be placed with the site that best meets their skills, interests, and qualifications. This project will offer VISTAs the chance to deepen existing community programs. After finishing the project year, VISTAs will be well-prepared for the job market. They will have clear “wins,” tangible examples of their leadership, and strong references who are ready to speak to the impact they have made. This project is perfect for someone wanting to get involved in the health professions, public health, community development, non-profit management, public administration, or communications. This project will run from August 1, 2022-July 31, 2023. For more information, contact Nayasia Coleman at ncoleman@highpoint.edu.
