HPU Education VISTA

High Point University (HPU) seeks to host fourteen VISTAs and two VISTA leaders to improve education and food security in High Point. All VISTAs can live in houses owned and maintained by HPU, but located off the main campus. All VISTAs will also receive a 19 meal dining plan during the academic year to off-set their food costs. The ten Education VISTAs will divide up several key tasks: 1. Develop marketing and fundraising materials for education non-profits. 2. Recruit mentors and tutors for Title I elementary school students. 3. Engage community leaders to increase pride in High Point Schools. 4. Build up after-school programs for elementary and middle school students. 5. Promote Adolescent Parents on succeeding in High School and being college or career ready. 6. Ensure Latinx students have the access they need to prepare for college. This project needs VISTAs who bring skills like: marketing, strategic communications, fundraising, community-building, networking, project development, and public speaking. VISTAs recruited into this project will be placed with the site that best meets their skills, interests, and qualifications. This project will offer VISTAs the chance to deepen existing community programs. They will get to build community ownership, engage volunteers, and shape the nature of these programs. After finishing the project year, VISTAs will be well-prepared for the job market. They will have clear “wins,” tangible examples of their leadership, and strong references who are ready to speak to the impact they have made. This project is perfect for someone wanting to get involved in education, education policy, community development, college readiness, non-profit management, public administration, politics, or communications. This project will run from August 1, 2022-July 31, 2023. For more information, contact Nayasia Coleman at ncoleman@highpoint.edu.
