Harvest VISTA: Outreach and Communications Assistant
Boston Area Gleaners (BAG) is a community-based organization that relies on volunteers for operational activities and donor support to grow their programs. Improving and increasing donor and volunteer initiatives will increase the capacity of the gleaning program, which gleans one million pounds annually in the region. Their VISTA project alleviates food insecurity by increasing access to healthy fresh produce for food-insecure communities in eastern MA, NH, and RI. In this project BAG partners with Harvest Against Hunger, a program incubator and catalyst utilizing a team of AmeriCorps VISTA who build sustainable community food systems programs across the country. VISTAs serve with their projects for a year: formalizing and creating systems around community outreach, developing new initiatives to expand and recruit new volunteers and donors, creating systems to collect data and evaluate programs, and more. Harvest Against Hunger projects aim to involve the larger community in addressing food insecurity.
