PCCE- University of Pennsylvania Alumni Center

This VISTA project will serve youth who have previously participated in UACS programs. The majority of UACS program participants attend the Netter Center’s University-Assisted Community Schools (UACS) Despite these troubling statistics, organizations like the Netter Center and Fab Youth Philly believe that our neighborhoods are not “under-resourced”, and instead are trying to shift the narrative and tell the story that our neighborhoods are in fact “resource-rich”. The challenge is that these resources are not being accessed or utilized as effectively as they could be. There are likely hundreds of youth-serving programs across the city of Philadelphia but there is no single directory of programs and there are limited opportunities to coordinate between programs to ensure that youth have equitable opportunities to access programs throughout their school-age years and as they transition into college or career. Through current work that Fab Youth Philly is leading under the federally-funded West Philadelphia Promise Neighborhood program, a professional learning community (PLC) has identified 10 youth-serving organizations within the West Philadelphia Promise Zone which are only about 2 square miles in size.

Member Duties : This VISTA project will increase access to and engagement in programs that support positive youth development (PYD). Quality out-of-school-time programs that promote PYD, like the ones facilitated by Netter Center UACS and Fab Youth Philly, have been shown to strengthen social, emotional, cognitive, and academic development, reduce risky behaviors, promote physical health, and provide a safe and supportive environment for youth. The positive impacts of out-of-school time programs are also indicators for K-12 success and post-secondary readiness by increasing the likelihood of college degree attainment and higher earning potential. By connecting youth to programs where they can learn, grow, and thrive, and by encouraging them to be engaged in these meaningful experiences from cradle to career, we expect the project to have a marked impact on our youth and the broader community.
