CCNYPA Finger Lakes Community Schools (FLX) VISTA
Our Collaboration ARCH model compels stakeholders to work together to support environments that help young people and families build attachment, regulation of self, competency and health. Attachment comes from the ability to develop trusting relationships. Regulation is a combination of social and emotional skills and capacity to cope. Competency can be academic competencies or non-academic. The ability to complete tasks and capacity to demonstrate skills builds self-efficacy. Health includes physical elements like activity and nutrition and more holistic wellness like self-care skills. These four domains are tied to resilience research. We need help to sustain and expand this model by building the capacity to recruit community members, volunteers and expand effective practices to more settings including more k-12 campuses, more community centers and libraries and places of worship. The work to develop mutually beneficial partnerships will hone the leadership skills of a VISTA and prepare VISTA to be leaders as the VISTA in turn prepares community partners, youth and other stakeholders to lead the development of mentoring and restorative practices. We aim to conduct resource mapping to assess the confidence and competence of local schools and community agencies to use mentoring and restorative practices; Create and refine existing mentoring volunteer training and recruitment tools; and Expand communication efforts across professional networks and throughout public facing media.
