CCAC is proposing an expansion of the America Reads tutoring program at CCAC’s Allegheny Campus. America Reads is a Community Service Federal Work-Study program wherein work-study eligible college students tutor elementary students in literacy skills. This national initiative was created by President Clinton’s administration to address the fact that 40% of children were not reading at a basic reading level by the end of third grade. America Reads provides community services to elementary students at no charge to the community while increasing the financial stability for the college tutors through their work-study wages. the VISTA will assist in increasing capacity for the literacy proficiency of elementary school students to increase their likelihood of academic success and break the cycle of poverty.The VISTA will create recruitment practices, interview systems, and volunteer mobilization.

Member Duties : The VISTA will build upon systems to assist in volunteer recruitment and mobilization for the America Reads tutors. With assistance from The Mentoring Partnership, the two cohorts of Tutors and members of the Advisory Board the VISTA will guide the development of a sustainability structure that includes offices and individuals within the College and the Pittsburgh Public School District. The VISTA will use research and data to assess the America Reads program and suggest improvements.
