Child & Family Services' VISTAs Strengthen Rural Communities

Child & Family Services of Northwestern Michigan (CFS) is an 80+ year old nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting children, youth and, families as they heal and grow. CFS serves over 6,000 individuals annually and offers assistance in more than 20 counties in Michigan. Though behavioral health services, parenting education, foster care and adoption, and services to youth including outreach, shelter, workforce development, and supportive services, CFS supports people in need every day. Thank you for your interest in this good work. CFS VISTAs must commit to serve a one-year, 365-day term serving 40 hours per week. VISTAs may be students or have outside employment, understanding that neither school nor work will conflict with service hours. Benefits: CFS VISTAs receive a bi-weekly living stipend of about $480, for a total stipend of $12,490 paid over one-year. VISTAs earn up to 10 days of personal leave and up to 10 days of sick leave during their yearlong term. Upon successful completion of the entire term, members earn a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of about $6,000 OR a cash stipend of about $1,800. VISTAs may be eligible for student loan relief programs during their term of service based on their individual circumstances. This may include deferment, forbearance, loan forgiveness, and/or interest payments. VISTAs receive basic health insurance coverage. Childcare assistance and other benefits may be available to eligible candidates. VISTA members receive a wide-variety of professional development and training opportunities based on the position, skills, interests, and available opportunities.

Member Duties : VISTAs support the “behind the scenes” work being done at CFS by helping the organization with capacity building activities – marketing, fundraising, data collection, creating or updating systems and tools, communications, building or strengthening partnerships, expanding current CFS programs, and more! Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, VISTAs will tele-serve until CFS offices safely re-open, at which time in-person service will resume. CFS will ensure candidates have the tools and training necessary to serve virtually from home. CFS’ VISTA project aims to expand the reach and efficiency of the organization by developing or improving systems, processes, and tools that will increase our capacity to serve more people. Activities may include: marketing and development; compliance and continuous quality improvement; outreach and communications; data collection and management; resource development; and developing or improving various management or planning systems.
